In response to your request regarding licensure in the area of speech-language pathology assistant, the following information is provided. Please read this information in its entirety.
PAMPHLET: Kentucky Revised Statutes Chapter 334A and Kentucky Administrative Regulations 201 KAR 17. Every candidate for licensure should become thoroughly knowledgeable with the contents of these laws and regulations.
INTERIM LICENSURE AS A SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT:
A person who has a baccalaureate degree in the area of speech-language pathology and who does not hold a valid and current credential as a speech-hearing specialist issued by the Kentucky Department of Education (a Kentucky teaching certificate) shall apply for an interim license as a speech-language pathology assistant while completing the postgraduate professional experience. The postgraduate professional experience shall be completed under the supervision of an appropriately qualified supervisor. The interim license expires at the end of the time period approved by the Board when the license was issued. Interim licenses may not be renewed.
Interim licensure applicants must submit:
- Completed application (pink form), with Plan of Activities for Postgraduate Professional Experience completed by the supervisor. (See enclosed Guidelines for Completion of Plan of Activities for Post Graduate Professional Experience.)
- Original transcript with the seal of the registrar, showing bachelor’s degree conferred; the transcript must be mailed directly to the Board office from the registrar. Transcripts "issued to student" will not be accepted.
- A copy of the supervisor’s Kentucky teaching certificate if he/she does not hold a Kentucky speech-language pathology license.
- Fifty dollar fee (check or money order made payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer). DO NOT SEND CASH. Application fees are not refundable.

PERMANENT LICENSURE AS A SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT:
Upon completion of the postgraduate professional experience, the speech-language pathology assistant shall make immediate application to the Board for permanent licensure. It is the applicant’s responsibility to read the laws and regulations carefully to ensure that the requirements for eligibility for permanent licensure as a speech-language pathology assistant are met. To be eligible for licensure by the Board as a speech-language pathology assistant, the applicant shall have earned a baccalaureate degree in the area of speech-language pathology, and shall submit the following:
- Completed application (green form)
- Original transcript with the seal of the registrar, showing bachelor’s degree conferred; the transcript must be mailed directly to the Board office from the registrar. Transcripts "issued to student" will not be accepted.
- If the Board previously received a transcript for the interim license file a second transcript is not necessary.
- Documentation of completion of postgraduate professional experience (tan form). (See enclosed Guidelines for Completion of Plan of Activities for Post Graduate Professional Experience.) NOTE: A separate PostGraduate Professional Experience report must be submitted for each change in site, supervisor or hours per week.
- Evaluation/Recommendation of the supervising speech-language pathologist (yellow form)
- A copy of the supervisor’s Kentucky teaching certificate if he/she does not hold a Kentucky speech-language pathology license. If the Board previously received a copy for the interim license file, a second copy is not necessary.
- Seventy-Five dollar initial licensure fee (check or money order made payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer). DO NOT SEND CASH. Application fees are not refundable.

NOTE TO ALL APPLICANTS: Please be advised that you must hold a license issued by the Board while you are providing services as a speech-language pathology assistant. If your interim license has expired, your application file for permanent licensure must be complete in order to continue practice. Within thirty (30) days after completion of the postgraduate professional experience, the applicant and his/her supervisor shall submit the completed application for permanent licensure and the documentation verifying the successful completion of the postgraduate professional experience. If the applicant’s file for permanent licensure is not complete and the interim license has expired, the applicant MUST IMMEDIATELY CEASE AND DESIST practice as a speech-language pathology assistant. Practicing as a speech-language pathology assistant without holding a current license is a violation of the law.
