When the Board changed the regulations effective July 1, 2007, the board allowed those with temporary license who had obtained an SCPI Advanced and had received 8 hours on role of an interpreter and 8 hours on ethics to do Community Interpreting. The rationale behind this was to give them experience in settings other than educational to help them improve their skills to the point they could be ready to take the RID Interpreter Certification test. The Board believes that it has paid off. Many have gone from temp to fully licensed this past year!
Those interpreters who are licensed for P-12 only, will not be listed in the directory because they are not licensed to work in the community. The directory is for persons who are looking to hire an interpreter for assignments. If a district is looking for an interpreter, then we send it out to the Interpreter listserv.
Those who are temporary and have SCPI Advanced are to accept assignments only for which they feel qualified. That is true even for fully licensed individuals. This also gives them an opportunity to team with a more experienced interpreter as well.
